Read the official press release below and keep an eye out for some old Southbank photos and video footage from times gone by here shortly.

“I’m pleased that Lambeth Council was able to work with both sides and find an imaginative solution to resolve this. Shared public space in London is precious and Southbank Centre is a great asset to the country’s cultural life. This agreement is a sensible way of protecting both and we can all now look forward.”
– Cllr Lib Peck, Leader of Lambeth Council

JOINT STATEMENT:

LONG LIVE SOUTHBANK AND SOUTHBANK CENTRE SECURE
FUTURE OF UNDERCROFT FOR SKATEBOARDING AND URBAN ACTIVITIES

Following talks that have taken place over the last three months, Long Live Southbank and Southbank Centre are delighted to have reached an agreement that secures the Queen Elizabeth Hall undercroft as the long-term home of British skateboarding and the other urban activities for which it is famous.

The agreement has been formalised in a binding planning agreement with Lambeth Council. In the agreement, Southbank Centre agrees to keep the undercroft open for use without charge for skateboarding, BMX riding, street writing and other urban activities.

On the basis of the protections secured by the planning agreement, Southbank Centre and Long Live Southbank have withdrawn their respective legal actions in relation to the undercroft. These include Southbank Centre’s challenge to the registration of the undercroft as an asset of community value, Long Live Southbank’s application for village green status for the undercroft, and a judicial review of Lambeth Council’s decision to reject the village green application.

Long Live Southbank is pleased to support Southbank Centre’s Festival Wing project for the improvement of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery, on the basis that the plans will now no longer include any redevelopment within the skate area of the Queen Elizabeth Hall undercroft.

Josie Millard for Altar Skate Shop!

20140911-234924.jpg

Josie Millard is a 16 year old shredder from Brighton, skating for only 4 years she has already been hooked up by clothing company Brahboys and more recently, Altar Skate Shop; a rad little skater owned shop based in Dartford, Kent.

We caught up with Josie to see what she’s been upto…

20140911-235005.jpg

Hey Josie! what have you been up to lately, and do you have any plans for next year?

I’ve been skating with friends mostly. I’ve also been filming with Jenna and Lucy for the ‘Days Like These’ film – Jenna’s new full length female skate video.
I don’t really have any plans for next year! I hope to be skating in new places and to keep meeting new people!

20140911-234703.jpg

Who do you like to skate with?

All my friends and locals!

There’s been loads going on this summer, what’s been your favourite skate event so far?

So many to choose from but probably Push the Prom! It was so good to see that many girls skating in Brighton.

Josie is currently nursing a rolled ankle after her fall at the Revolution Girls Jam at the weekend which won her Best Slam. She’s gutted not to be skating the Mile End comp this Sunday but we hope she takes it easy and gets better real soon!!

Revolution Girls Skate Jam Photos ONLINE NOW!

Last Sunday, over 50 girls traveled from Brighton, Bristol, Shropshire, London, Leeds, Sheffield and all over Kent to attend the first ever girls skate jam at Revolution Skatepark in Broadstairs. The locals were stoked to see the likes of Lucy Adams, Lois Pendlebury, Josie Millard, Georgie Winter, Becky Jaques and Claire Alleume shredding amongst loads of other new faces. The jam kicked off at 12 with prize throw outs for tricks in every room.

It was really rad to see everyone going for it and trying new stuff, Carla and Wings got their flip to fakies, Josie & Becky got rad with their double blunts, Lois rode up walls and Lucy flowed around the park hitting everything.

Josie & Becky unfortunately both took bad slams but after a couple of trips to the hospital we’re told all is good in the hood. Hopefully they won’t be out for too long!

Trophy girlHuge thank you to Revolution Skatepark for their hospitality, to all of our sponsors; Route One, WeSC, Milk Skateboards, Rogue Skateboards, Jimmy’z, Lovenskate, Man Up Girl! Brahboys, Cire, Stance Socks, Axe Distribution, Story Clothing, Roam & Seek and Sidewalk.

Also thanks to Thrashion for our awesome trophies! Lucy went away with Best Skater, Josie got Best Slam and Most improved went to this little lady on the left (we didn’t catch her name!)

Special thanks to Shelley – Georgia Yates for being a multi-tasking star on the day and generally getting everyone hyped… at one point we caught her on the mic and filming at the same time!
And massive thanks to Wings Chan for helping set up in the morning whilst I cleaned cupcake icing off my shirt!

Take a look at our photo gallery below, courtesy of our very own photographer David Lawrie, (you might remember his photos from Push The Prom earlier this summer…)

Keep an eye out for our full edit coming shortly but for now check out the edit from Revolution Skatepark at the top of this post!

Skater Bio : Wings Chan

We first met Wings around 2008 whilst coaching skate lessons at our local indoor park, she wore weird clothes, had crazy hair, a huge smile and a secret tattoo that you wasn’t allowed to tell Mummy Chan about.
6 years on and not much has changed, except maybe a few more scribbles on her legs and an even bigger fire in her belly. Also after years of wearing knee high socks, she did finally decide to tell her mum about the tattoos!

We love skating with Wings, you can hear her (very) loud laugh from across the park, she says what she thinks, is always the best fun to be around and reminds us to not take skateboarding (or life!) too seriously.

Our newest author Tash interviewed Wings to go alongside her new skate edit, read on to find out more about our Chinese beauty then watch her video below!!

Hi Wings, Please introduce yourself…

I’m Wings Chan, 21yrs old and studying Business Information Systems at the University of Brighton. My home town is in Kent but during term times I live in Brighton!

What do you like to do other than skate?

I love to make Sushi, Play Pokemon, cosplay, watch anime and make things!

20140902-194806.jpg

When and why did you start skating?

I got introduced to skateboarding at 15 but never really got into it properly till recently. I started to skate because i like to have fun with my friends and enjoy the challenges of skateboarding! I really enjoyed skating with my rad skate girls, Danni introduced me into the girl skate scenes and invited me to the girl skate jams where i then made a bunch of skate friends, all from different cultures!

20140902-195605.jpg

Why do you still skate now and what’s been your skateboarding journey so far?

I skate now because it’s fun and it always keeps me giggling and smiling skating with friends and meeting new people. It’s also a great exercise! If I didn’t skate I would be very chubby!

I just like to play and have fun so i don’t really have much of a journey other than spending it with my friends and especially skating with the girlies and Altar Skate Shop lot!

20140902-195530.jpg

What’s your favourite place to skate?

I don’t mind where I skate as long as I am skateboarding with my friends. I go through phases of liking different skateparks, i’ll be into mini and next i’ll be into street, i like to mix it up!

Where would you love to skate in the world?

I would like to skate Japan with a group of friends, because of the culture and I love anime. Pikachu.

20140902-194815.jpg

What does skateboarding mean for you?

Skateboarding for me is about having fun and enjoying yourself with other people!

And lastly, what’s the best advice you could give to fellow skateboarders?

Smile and Skate!

Watch Wings new skate edit below for lots of laughs and giggles!
