CANOE INC. PRESS EVENT

Last week Girl Skate UK were kindly invited to Canoe Inc‘s Press Event in London. We got a sneak peek of some top street-wear brands’ Spring/Summer 2015 collections and of course, we wanted to share what we spotted with you!

Volcom

Volcom was the first company to combine surfing, skating and snowboarding under one brand. Volcom’s desire to draw outside the lines and to react on what instinctively comes from inside sets them apart. Late nights spent at shows, early dawn trips fuel the desire to create a line that encompasses the Volcom lifestyle.

And we love it! This SS15 collection offers a host of striking tie-dye, leopard and tropical floral prints and a strong denim collection, whatever your style, from cut-off and boyfriend fit shorts to coloured, distressed and ripped jeans. Volcom’s bikinis are water-tested by their surf team, and are not only up to the job of tearing around on the open waters but also look bangin’.

And as for that ‘Rad Vibes’ atlas cap… Woah! Our particular fave 🙂

Burton

Building quality snowboard equipment since 1977, independently owned Burton are the ultimate snowboard brand, making everything from snowboards, bindings and boots to a comprehensive range of clothing, luggage and accessories. And Burton are the worlds best selling snowboard brand for good reason.

Okay, so we know that Burton are a snowboard rather than a skateboard company, but that doesn’t stop them from producing some pretty sweet backpacks (with straps ideal for carrying your deck), luggage and clothing for both colder and warmer climes.

The watercolour-style jellyfish print caught our eye… Used on a hoodie, lightweight zip-up as well as a vest (with a nice little twisted back-strap detail), which were super cute AND practical. Our kinda style!

The bold stripes and marbled-effect designs on another two vests were pretty rad too, but we were definitely lusting after the backpacks and luggage bags from the SS15 Burton range! Just looking at them has made us start thinking about booking our Summer 2015 skate trips already…

KR3W

When it comes to garms in the skateboard industry, we have to mention KR3W. You’ll find jeans, jackets, hoodies, and KR3W hats on riders all over the world. With pieces to cover all aspects of skateboard and street-wear style, KR3W are a favourite for skate stars like Chad Muska, Jim Greco, Tom Penny, and many more.

Fusing art & music with skate and street styles and influenced and assigned by some of the worlds best riders, Kr3w provides he clothing riders want most. Kinds funny coincidence maybe, be we spotted a rather cool Kr3w long0sleeve tee that had palm trees and ‘Endless bummer’ printed on it… nod the the new Palace Skateboard video that dropped last month maybe? You decide!

We also saw a rather interesting book on their stand too, ‘Touch Me I’m Sick’ by Charles Peterson whose grunge videos seemed to have influenced a section of their SS15 collection.

“Poised at the epicentre of an explosive underground scene, photographer Peterson witnessed the birth of  brash new era of music that grabbed the world by its throat and refused to let go. Grunge, the bastard child of 60s garage and 70s punk, revived the original, gritty spirit of rock and roll: rebellion ain’t pretty, but it sure is fun.” – Book excerpt.

Vans

In 1966, the Van Doren Rubber Company opened for business in Anaheim, CA. Soon, Vans’ simple canvas shoes became a staple at the beach and throughout Southern California. Not long after, SoCal teens found that Vans’ sticky gum rubber sole and sturdy construction made the shoes perfect for skateboarding; making Vans the world’s first skate shoe company. Almost 50 years later, Vans still strives to create durable footwear for those that value quality and freedom of expression. Those beach staples have evolved into a full line of Vans Classics that pay homage to their surf and skate heritage.

Unfortunately Vans didn’t allow any product photography, but we did manage to track down some patterns that will be included in their SS15 collection! The Polka Dots and Stripes you will see on the new Classic Slip Ons and the Liberty prints on Old Skool & Era models!

We’d really like to thank Canoe Inc. for a great day and for looking after us so well! And we hope you’re just as excited as we are to see the SS15 items dropping next year.

What’s your favourite piece? Let us know what you think!

Skater Bio : Rianne Evans

We’re proper into Autumn now – the nights are drawing in and it’s getting trickier to find dry spots to skate. No worries! Here’s another skater bio for you to enjoy. This week I’ve been speaking to 21-year old Rianne Evans, who I only noticed ripping it up this summer but has had mad skills for quite a while. You may have seen her at the Unicorn Girls Jam.

Hey Rianne! Tell me a bit about yourself – is skateboarding what you do for a living?

I’ve been working for Tesco for the past 3 years because it’s easy and reasonable pay for what it is. I’ve just started Brighton Uni studying Earth and Ocean Science, I hope to get into marine conservation further down the line. I just don’t want to end up with a desk job with the same environment every day.

I’ve had desk jobs for the last 8 years – it just makes getting out there all the sweeter! So have you always lived in Brighton?

No – I’ve only been here 2 weeks, it seems pretty hectic!,The skateparks pretty quirky and so busy everyday! I’m originally from Bournemouth though which is rad! The skate scene there’s really good, it’s well chilled, everyone gets along and we often have fun skate events like Queen of Kings where all the boys dressed up in drag. I pretty much grew up at Kings skatepark, it’s home.

Dressing up in drag is pretty fun. What was the hardest thing about getting into skateboarding?

For me it was definitely worrying what other people thought, when I first started I would get down the skatepark super early in the morning to skate when the park was quiet. When you make friends with everyone at the skatepark thought it becomes a lot easier and people are always really supportive!

What other stuff are you into?

I pretty much skate every day I can, It’s probably my only real hobby. It’s hard enough to find time for skating sometimes with work, uni and friends… I don’t think I could handle anything else, I enjoy my sleep too much.

Spoken like a true veteran…so what’s your skateboarding story?

I started skating about 6 years ago when I was 14 because two girls I was friends with started skating and I thought I would jump on the bandwagon, they didn’t stick with it though which is a shame. I really loved skating for the first 2 to 3 years then I sort of couldn’t be bothered with it and only went down the park every few months to prove to myself I could still do it. I think the skate scene sort of died because of people moving to university and away in general, hardly anyone would go down the skatepark, which sort of made skating pretty boring. I got really back into it again this year though, the scene down the parks is definitely getting bigger again, new generation and all that. I’m glad I’m back to skating everyday I can now it, I don’t know how I could have gone months without it now.

Do you skate with other people then?

Back home in Bournemouth I just skate with whoever is at the park and go on trips to other parks nearby with whoever’s going. My friend Geordie has been real good to me always taking me places to skate and sorting me out in general. I like to skate with the girls when I can too but that usually involves travelling to girl skate events.

Are you goofy or regular?

Goofy!

Too right! And what’s your favourite place to goofy-foot it?

Probably Kings park my local in Bournemouth, although it’s boring because I’ve skated it for so long it’s home. I like Mile End in London, Swalecliffe in Kent and Taunton in Somerset they’re all fun parks.

Yes – I can vouch for Taunton, my hometown. Where would you love to skate anywhere in the world?

Probably America, somewhere like California because I’ve heard it’s amazing or Australia, anywhere with a good scene, sick parks and nice weather to be honest.

Favourite trick?

Because I skate a lot of ramp my favourite trick to watch is 5.0 fakies, I once had a dream I could do them and I was so happy until I woke up. I can only do stalls on a 2ft (sometimes), it will take me ages to learn them on a proper ramp and even longer to grind them… I just don’t understand that trick!

What does skateboarding mean for you?

I think the social side of skateboarding has always been the best bit about it for me, there’s such a huge community but at the same time it’s so small you’re always meeting someone that will know a friend of yours even from across the globe. It’s also just a good way to clear your head and take time away from the real world. The self-achievement you get form learning new tricks is good too. It’s really nice to land something that you’ve been trying for a long time.

And finally, what advice would you give to fellow skateboarders?

To people starting up I would say just stick it at it everyone was in the same position when they started, no one was good straight away. You have to skate for yourself, don’t listen to negative people and don’t let people get you down.

Cheers Rianne! Check out the lovely bit of footage of Rianne and others from the Unicorn Girls Jam

ROM SKATEPARK GIVEN PROTECTED HERITAGE STATUS – FIRST IN EUROPE!

The icon of the 1970s British skateboard scene, Romford Skatepark in Hornchurch has been Grade II listed!

It is the FIRST skatepark in Europe to be given such status, and the SECOND in the entire World.

One of the most elaborate and complete examples of a purpose built skatepark has been listed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of English Heritage. Built in Hornchurch in 1978 by Adrian Rolt and G-Force, the leading skatepark designers of the period, ‘the Rom’ is the best example of a small number of skateparks that still survive from the early heyday of the skateboarding boom in the UK.

Nick in the Pool

This is the first time a skatepark has been listed anywhere in Europe, and the second skatepark to be listed in the world, the first being “Bro Bowl” in Tampa, Florida, added to the USA’s National Register of Historic Places in October 2013.

Heritage Minister, Ed Vaizey, said: “The Rom was built in the late seventies for the very first skateboarders and is as popular now as it was then. Its listing at Grade II is testament to its design and also highlights how the UK’s unique heritage reflects all parts of our culture and history. I hope the protection provided by this listing ensures the pool, moguls and snake run can be enjoyed for years to come.”

Roger Bowdler, Designation Director at English Heritage, said: “Skateboarding is more than a sport: it has become a world-wide cult. The Rom is the finest example in England to this aspect of youth culture, and we are delighted its special interest will be protected for future generations through listing. It gives the whole idea of heritage an extra twist.”

The Rom is the product of a skateboarding craze that swept Britain in the 1970s. As skateboarding fever gripped the nation a rash of skateparks were built, but later demolished as popularity declined. The Rom is a rare survivor of this period and has been one of the most influential sites in British skateboarding culture ever since.

rom

The Rom opened in August 1978. Designed by Adrian Rolt of G-force, the park is made up of seamless shotcrete (pressurised concrete) closely based on Californian skateparks. These in turn were based on the various urban spaces colonised by pioneer skaters, including the oval and kidney-shaped swimming pools of the Los Angeles elite and the vast concrete spillways and drainage features of the Californian coast. These structures influenced the design of the early purpose-built skateparks, built in ever-increasing numbers during the worldwide skateboarding craze of the mid-1970s.

For an idea on scale, check out this google maps birds eye view of Rom in all its glory!

Our little friend Ione Atkinson (also 6), brought to our attention that Stu Braun had posted some new footage of mini ripper Sky and OH MY GOSH, this little girl is shredding like a boss at just 6 years old, – we’ll be keeping an eye on this one for sure…
