RUSH SKATEPARK GIRLS NIGHT 13TH JUNE!

Ladies of Gloucestershire! Apparently some of you have been on your best behaviour, as Rush skatepark have decided to run yet ANOTHER girls only session on 13th June 2014! For those that don’t know, Rush is a HUGE 40,000 square foot skate park, boasting an open plan set up and ramps to suit everybody, whether you are a beginner or a pro!

Fran Stroud from Stroud, and the little celebrity Emily Holt from Malmesbury (Emily was recognised in a skate shop from the ‘Little Ladies’ interview we had with her last month!) popped along to the event to check it out. You can watch a video from the night made by Emily & her Dad, Alan above!

We caught up with Fran Stroud from Stroud for the low down…

“Friday evening saw the first girl’s night at Rush skatepark in Brimscome, just outside Stroud in Gloucestershire. With a backdrop of disco music, the girls enjoyed having the 40,000 sqft park to themselves.

In attendance was local girl Georgia Kemp, throwing huge melon grabs and 360s into the foam pit from the 12ft drop in, as well as hitting all the other sections of the park with style. In addition, the newly dubbed “Mini Fran” was regaining confidence after a year break from skating, building up to dropping in on the 4 and 5ft quarters.
Paula was getting to grips with the bowl while Emily Holt from Malmesbury was cruising the street section, dropping into the quarters and getting her first bit of air out of the little kicker.

There was a very supportive atmosphere throughout the evening, with skateboard coach Brett giving lots of encouragement and tips. Hope to see more new faces at the next one!

Interview with the Mum and Dad who pushed his son down a vert ramp

It seems an American tv channel has caught up with the Dad who pushed his 6 year old son down a 13ft vert ramp. The original did the rounds on social media a few weeks back and naturally, caused uproar. A number of pro skaters, many fathers/mothers themselves, re posted the 3 second clip expressing their concern and disgust. Click here to get the full lowdown from Sidewalk.
The video contains several clips of the original “pushy parent” if you havent seen it already, plus news on the little guys health and also how the 3 seconds of stupidity has affected his parents’ general day to day lives.

Welcoming Em Ledger of Getbusy!

20140513-231003.jpgWe are SO stoked to announce that Em Ledger from the late Getbusy store has joined our growing team of writers for the blog!

We were absolutely gutted to hear of the closure of our favourite UK girls store, ‘Getbusy’ on April 25th 2014. Aptly named, the girls behind Getbusy did exactly that, sorting all of us ladies out with fresh threads in head to toe coolness from all of our favourite brands.

We had an article about the store and all of its glory written up ready to post when we learnt of the sad news via their instagram page. Sophie Pethers, one of our writers for Girl Skate UK had a few words to say about the store…

‘Getbusy’ is, simply put, a life savour for all girl skaters out there. Don’t get me wrong, I love the comfort of wearing guy-cut t-shirts for skating, especially for when off for a skate after a hench burger and 2 pint milkshake to hide the growing food baby comfortably. However, when the suns out I find the only thing I can wear are girl-cut t-shirts and vest tops otherwise I over heat in minutes!
‘Get Busy’ store sells big brand skate clothes in girl cuts to fit every body shape; from Diamond Supply fitted t-shirts to women’s Carharrt trousers, ‘Get Busy’ provides all the essentials a girl will need to go skate, and all provided on one website, saving the hassle of having to search the internet for hours to try and find comfortable and stylish clothing.”

We caught up with Em and asked her for a few words on the ‘Heartbreaking decision” to close up shop and find out a bit more about what she’s up to at the moment…

“I recently had to make the incredibly hard decision to close Getbusy Store after 3 years of representing women and girls in the street, skate and active sports industry. Our main goal, as a business was to provide a welcoming space for women, to buy a wide range of styles and sizes for many identities, from a bunch of brands and close that gap
in the market, something we as customers and individuals were frustrated with previously. We loved the idea of a store for street and skate wear that was run by women, for women and to build a community to help strengthen the growing community and all the amazing
ladies out there killin it.

Unfortunately, despite our regular customers, positive reviews and continued growth, the current climate for small independent businesses is a real struggle and we were unable to carry on.

We are so proud of what we achieved though and we feel we certainly left a mark as women in the industry. We look forward with a hope that more women come forward and continue to widen this sisterhood and help provide positive influences and role models for eachother and showcase our skills, talents and creativity on a large scale.

After shutting up shop, i moved back to my hometown and i’m currently finding my feet and thinking about what’s next… (i’m also on the look out for girl skaters in Doncaster to hit up local spots with – hit me up guys!) The whole process has obviously been quite stressful but i’m determined to keep on and stay positive. I’ve always loved writing so am taking the time to get back into freelance journalism, blogging and making print zines.

Having the opportunity to write for this site is a huge honour
and i’m so excited to get started!”

We are STOKED to have you on the team Em!!

Little Ladies #3: Tabitha Sanders, 5yrs

Tabitha1

Tabs got into skating totally by chance, one day she just decided she wanted a skateboard, and after a session at Empire Skatepark shortly after her 5th birthday, was hooked! She didn’t even know anybody who skateboards, but was just drawn to the idea!!

Tabby is a very determined rider and will try things over and over again to get them right, but she’s also very relaxed about it and doesn’t get annoyed if she can’t figure something out right away!

Tabs just loves the friends she has made at the skatepark, her favourite people to skate with are the kids who skate at the group sessions on a Saturday morning.
There is a big age range but somehow she slots her 5-year-old self in very well, and spends a LOT of her time chatting and watching everyone’s new tricks! Lewis Hall, Harry Wilson & Lee Blackwell have been amazing help, every time they see Tabby they encourage her so much. She loves those guys!

We’ve heard Tabitha is REALLY looking forward to the All Girl Skate Jam in June… and we look forward to meeting you too Tabby!
