Skateboarding In A City On Lockdown

“The Paris attacks pushed Brussels into the centre of Europe’s debate about immigration, intolerance and radicalisation. Ursulines skatepark offers a refreshing counterpoint, here kids from all backgrounds skate together in peace.”

Huck Magazine travelled to Brussels to meet a multicultural group of teenage skaters and see life under the lockdown through their eyes.

“Through spending two days in their world, we found music, skateboarding and the kids’ punk attitude to life proved stronger than the cultural, racial and religious differences that many would expect to drive them apart.”

In this humbling short, Fatima takes us around the city of Brussels, in the few days following the November terrorist attacks in Paris, where we meet Ramy and Daniela, the teenagers who use skateboarding as an escape to the very real dangers that surround them.

A really inspiring story from Huck, you can read the full article here… http://www.huckmagazine.com/huck-tv/skate-huck-films/teenage-utopia-skating-lockdown/

HELP SKATEISTAN REACH THEIR GOAL

There is just ONE MONTH left to raise $100,000 for the KEEP SKATEISTAN ROLLING campaign… OVER $30,000 HAS BEEN RAISED SO FAR!

“SKATEISTAN MEANS THE LAND OF SKATE. IT’S OUR LAND.”

“After a year and a half of Street Outreach sessions and activities in Cambodia, in 2012 we opened our own facility, to provide skateboarding, arts and leadership opportunities to girls and boys in the capital.

Now, over 200 youth in Cambodia skate and learn with us each week, attending our Skate and Create or Youth Leadership programs at the park and in the classroom, as well as continuing Street Outreach sessions with the mobile tuk-tuk skate ramp.

Over the past three years, we have watched as students have gone on to become volunteers, role models and youth leaders in our community and around the world.

Thanks to everyone who has helped us raise $30,000 so far! Over 1600 youth attend Skateistan programs each week around the world, but in 2016 we are aiming to reach 2000.”

Days Like These Images

Is Days Like These the first full part you’ve ever worked on?

Days like these will be my first proper part. I’ve worked on park videos, and had a couple of clips in little edits in the past – but this will be my first street section!

How do you feel about being involved in the project?

I’m pretty excited to be involved, as I’ve never filmed for a full length. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone else has done!

Does skating with other females inspire you?

Skating with other girls is definitely different to skating with guys… Big events like the GSUK one year jam have been rad; it gets all the girls together. It’s lovely to meet up with everyone and it’s  always an encouraging environment!

Any good stories from filming missions that you care to share?
There’s been some pretty funny climbing stories – trying to get into various spots with Lucy… I’m sure she’ll always remember the struggle of climbing through a hole the size of a cat flap, to skate a crusty bank ha.

Who’s part are you looking forward to the most?
Julia’s part is gonna be amazing for sure. Looking forward to everyone’s section though really!
