Women in Skateboarding – Past and Present

Research into skateboarding is on the increase, as people are becoming more interested in what we do, how we shape local cultures and how we construct our identities.

There is also a growing network of skateboarders who have entered the world of academia themselves, in a broad range of different fields, and who often find themselves drawn to studying skateboarding as part of their research. Over the past few years I seem to have become one of them!

I’ve always been fascinated by different women’s experiences of skateboarding, and about the women who have shaped skateboarding culture here in the UK. With this in mind, myself and fellow skate-academic, Chrissy Collins, are working on a joint research paper to try and uncover some of these hidden histories, practices and experiences.

We will be sharing our initial results at the Theoretical Archaeology Group conference in Southampton later this month, in a special session dedicated to discussing skateboarding and archaeology (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/tag2016/sessionsabstracts/session32.page).

We’ve created a survey and we’d love it if you’d like to help us out by responding to our questions. It’ll take between 5-10 minutes to complete, depending on how much detail you provide. We’ve also left an email address on the survey in case you’d like to get in touch and keep up to date with the research results, though we’ll also be writing a summary for GSUK in the coming weeks. GIVE HER FIVE! SKATEISTAN CAMPAIGN

Skateistan Pushes For Girls Empowerment Through Their Latest Fundraising Campaign, Give Her Five!

Skateistan, the non-profit organization which uses skateboarding and education for youth empowerment unveils a new fundraising campaign, “Give Her Five”. The campaign highlights the positive impact Skateistan is having on the lives of girls in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa.

It launches with an inspiring animation called “Her Story” about an Afghan girl empowered by skateboarding and education.

From December 5th, Skateistan is asking the public to Give Her Five by donating $5 in a bid to raise $100,000 by December 31st. Skateistan believes girls have an equal right to be safe, play sport, go to school, have confidence and become leaders. 50% of their students are girls. At their Skate Schools in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa, girls are skateboarding and learning together in much-needed safe spaces.

Since 2009, skateboarding has proven to be a powerful tool for girls to access education, with Afghanistan being home to the highest percentage of female skateboarders in the world.

“This is a very important campaign because girls deserve the same chances in life that boys get. The Skateistan community cares a lot about girls empowerment and you can support this!” says Skateistan Founder and Executive Director, Oliver Percovich.

About one-third of countries in developing regions still need to achieve gender parity in primary education (UN Sustainable Development Goals 2016), but Skateistan is actively working to change that and provide opportunities for girls. Throughout “Give Her Five”, Skateistan will share real-life stories of empowerment.

From girls who have found their confidence through sport, to students who have gained scholarships to private school and women who have travelled overseas to skateboard with the world’s best.

Skateistan has proven that when given the right opportunities, girls can change their lives, their communities and ultimately the world.

Donate $5 today at skateistan.org/donate.

JOSIE MILLARD FOR WELCOME SKATEBOARDS!

We are proud to announce that top lass Josie Millard is the new UK representative for Welcome Skateboards, via Keen Distribution!

Since arriving on the scene just a few years ago, (after being spotted by talent hunter Lucy Adams) the Brightonian has grown both her style and her bag of tricks. Softly spoken and down to earth, Josie is one of the nicest skateboarders you will meet.

Congrats mate, you fully deserve it!!!!!
