TRY OUT skateboarding with us at Sheffield SheFest March 6th!

SheFest is back for 2017 with a variety of inclusive events as part of the city-wide festival, kicking off on March 6 and running until March 12.

And now SheFest is urging Sheffield woman to come together for the largely-free festival events, to ‘learn, explore, discuss and have fun.’

Come along to the House Skatepark 6-9pm to try out a range of activities in a female only environment – Kirsty and I will be on hand to coach so beginners totally welcome!

Other activities will include workshops, question and answer sessions with inspiring women, coaching sessions, dance classes, exhibitions and film screenings.

There will also be the opportunity for women to try their hand at singing in a choir, exploring healthy lifestyles, and mixing business with some tasty burritos.

International Women’s Day, on March 8, has been celebrated every year since 1911, as the global recognition of social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. A series of talks, events and workshops are being held in Sheffield next month to celebrate women, as part of International Women’s Day.

A spokesman for the event said: “Despite how far we’ve come, the World Economic Forum estimates gender equality won’t be achieved until 2186.

New for 2017, we’re also running a series of Lunchtime Learning 45-minute sessions, which are designed to fit into your lunch break, therefore accessible to city workers, students, mums and everyone inbetween.

“From business and branding to wellness and yoga, we hope to inspire and empower you, quicker than the time taken to digest a sandwich!”

Other highlights of the festival include a performance of the Vagina Monologues, at Theatre Deli, a ‘What Now For Parents Returning To Work’ talk from McCanna Coaching, a look at why women make the best scientists, with Dr Melissa Butt, and coaching session on ‘How To Say No’ with Valerie Monti Holland.

Lunchtime learnings are free but pre-booking is essential, by visiting: shefestsheffield.eventbrite.com

Southbank Minute Series – Episode 2: ‘Step Into A World’ from Jenna Selby

Southbank Minute Series – Episode 2: ‘Step Into A World’ from Jenna Selby with across-the-decades footage featuring Savannah Keenan, Lucy Adams, Anita Almonte, Helena Long, Georgie Winter, Rachael Sherlock @rachael_sherlock, Zoe Kings, Sadie Hollins, Maria Falbo, Laura Goh and general SB ambience.

Jenna’s story:

“My favourite Southbank moment was in 1999 when my friend Dee and I thought it would be a good idea to see in the New Year down at SB. Never been so bloomin cold even though we were skating! We we’re on the first train home after midnight…it was a good laugh all the same though.

When I first started skating in the late ’90’s it was the place to go at weekends and meet up with your friends who didn’t live close by. It’s kind of got that lasting memory now for me of quieter times (in terms of it wasn’t so mainstream) when we had no phones but just enjoyed being there.

I like filming Savannah Keenan as you can tell she’s a local. Every time I go down there she seems to have pulled a new trick out of the bag. I think my favourite moment was the first time she ollied the stairs last year. She spent 2 hours killing herself until we eventually got it on camera.

I really hope that we could open up the old space under the building again – it used to be there when I first started. I don’t really like being watched by passing public and so very much appreciated the quieter areas.”

Lacey Baker, Thrasher Interview

A few weeks ago Lacey Baker released her part “My World” in collaboration with Thrasher Magazine. It was arguably one of the best female parts ever released and and gathered over 16000 likes on Facebook, with the average like count for Thrasher never really pushing 5000. The part oozed technical ability and had the steeze to match. Today, Thrasher has an interview up on the site, with Lacey talking about the part, moving to New York, and the Olympics. Click the photo below to read the interview, or if you haven’t seen the part yet, educate yourself, link also below.
