SKATEISTAN OPEN NEW SKATE SCHOOL IN CAMBODIA

Skateistan, the award-winning non-profit organization empowering children and youth through skateboarding and education, launched a new Skate School in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Friday (February 23rd).

Over 100 children celebrated alongside special guests from around the world, including skaters Sky Brown, Mimi Knoop, Jim Thiebaud and funding partner, The Skateroom.

As soon as the ribbon was cut by students to officially open the Skate School, girls took to the new 500 square meter skatepark to put on a demo for the crowd – dropping in from the highest ramps and showing off new skills they had already learned on the concrete features built by New Line Skateparks.

This was followed by a pro skate demo in which 9-year-old Sky Brown wowed the local children (and her new friends) on the mini ramp. There was also breakdancing, a magic show, interactive wall art and a 360-degree nature experience. It was a magical day celebrating the power of skateboarding and creativity to change the lives of children in Cambodia.

Skateistan first began running programs in Phnom Penh in 2011 and recently moved to a new location, within the creative hub of Factory Phnom Penh, to better meet the needs of local children, in particular girls and children living with disabilities. 240 children and youth are currently part of the programs (Outreach, Skate and Create and Youth Leadership) in Phnom Penh, of which 53% are girls.

This new space will enable Skateistan to provide skateboarding and educational opportunities to even more children in the local community surrounding the Skate School whilst continuing to work with multiple partner organizations in the city.

Built in partnership with Building Trust International, the new Skate School was funded by The Skateroom through sales of limited edition skate decks featuring the artwork of Grayson Perry and Andy Warhol.

The facility consists of a skatepark, classroom, library, office and large green space. It was designed by architects at Atelier Cole, with input from local Skateistan staff and the skate community.

It’s the perfect new space for Skateistan to run their programs, which are supported by Jochnick Foundation, Google.org, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Swedish Postcode Foundation, CHPO, FYF, Shining Pictures and InMaat Foundation.

The skatepark is the first of its kind in Cambodia and, when not in use by Skateistan students, will be open for the public to enjoy this bright new start for Skateistan in Cambodia sees the non-profit organization further integrating into the community and providing a safe space for local children to play and learn for many years to come.

Help young skater girls in Palestine

We’re stoked with how many of the UK girls have gone out to volunteer with SKATEPAL in Palestine over the past few years, helping to build skateparks and educate children, especially girls.

This summer, Marie Mayassi from Leeds will be heading over to teach, read her story below then go donate to her fundraising campaign linked at the bottom of this page!

“This July I will be volunteering with SKATEPAL a UK based charity teaching skateboarding to young people in Palestine 🇵🇸 . I will be teaching young girls (according to Palestinian cultural norms) in Asira al-Qibliya a Palestinian town in eastern West-Bank.

Doing it in Palestine will be a great opportunity to give back to the community by helping these children with very limited access to education, sports and culture due to the occupation 🇮🇱.

Girl Skate UK Winter Edit

As the cold and wet days start to lengthen, and before that spring warmth dawns upon us, us at Girl Skate UK want to celebrate all the UK girls who’ve made the extra effort to stay skating over the winter. We are calling for submissions from you lot! We’re asking you to send in your favourite clips of you skating this winter and we’ll be collating the footage and editing together all the best clips into a Girl Skate UK Winter edit.

The edit will be featured on our site and youtube channel as well as on our socials. To take part, all you need to do is send over your clips to us via the following:

  1. Go to https://wetransfer.com and upload your clips

  2. Send to us at gsukvideo@outlook.com

  3. Do this by Monday 19th March

We would prefer clips in the landscape format. It doesn’t have to be a jazzy camera, just smartphone footage will do, as long as it’s clear and we can see what’s going on.

BARKING SKATE JAM GALLERY

We hosted a girls skate jam in Barking in December, the turnout was amazing with over 60 girls showing up to the super accommodating Better Extreme skatepark.

We had Lucy Adams and Kirsty Tonner on the mic throwing out the plentiful prizes from our sponsors Shiner Dist & Santa Cruz Skateboards, Jenna Selby was there to snap all of the best bits, and a small film production company come along to shoot a short film with us for Facebook. The film will be shown next week at the Facebook Communities Summit in London, more news on that soon!

The impromptu jam was the most fun we’d had in ages and it was a great way to round off 2017. Thanks to everyone for coming along at such short notice, we hope you enjoyed the pizza!
