Keep on Pushin: This Week in Skateboarding

The weather has been on our side, Push The Prom is happening this weekend and also, there have been a bunch of rad happenings in the world of skateboarding. Two bits that caught our eye in particular (despite an absence of girls unfortunately) that will resonate with all skaters are:

‘Keep on Pushin’
This new video from Ricki Bedenbaugh is part of REDirect; a celebration of skateboard filmmaking incorporating twelve of the most renowned skateboarding filmmakers as part of a collaboration between RED and The Berrics. Ricki’s film represents what skateboarding means to him and features celebrated skaters such as Natas Kaupas, Eric Dressen, Matt Hensley and more. It’s beautifully shot and really shows the skate lifestyle and sensibility. With bonus treats of the Ike and Tina soundtrack and punk legend Ian McKaye narrating, it’s a great watch.

Another happening this week is the hugely positive and widespread response to an interview Jenkem Mag did with Sam McGuire titled ‘An Interview With Skateboarding’s Gayest Photographer’

The piece asks ‘Is skateboarding really as homophobic as people think it is?’ With a leading question like that, you may assume people would be riled or get defensive but actually the piece has shown an amazing community spirit and a welcome, positive response to the piece. Well done Jenkem for tackling an issue so thoughtfully and for Sam for being so brave and awesome. Click the link above for the full piece.
