Car commercials have long been known to project gender stereotypes, advertising masculinity, strength and power. This ad from Audi Spain, however, turns the tables on stereotypes, challenging them with the use of ‘girl’ and boy’ toys.
It’s a familiar scene in most toy shops… two toy aisles divided by pink and blue lights; on the pink side, dolls pushing strollers and putting on makeup, and on the blue side, trucks, cars and construction cranes.
Sitting in a horse & carriage missing her chauffeur, one of the dolls realizes she’s not going anywhere fast and so swings over to the “boy aisle” to choose her own ride. The car toy she has her eye on opens up the passenger door for her to climb inside, however this doll aint nobodies passenger so walks around to the driver’s side and takes off down the aisles, where she sees plenty of other toys pushing boundaries.
When the lights come back on in the toy store, people start flooding in before she is able to get herself back to her designated places — but that doesn’t matter to one little boy.
Check out the awesome advertisement and see the way they challenge gender stereotypes above and then rethink the presents you buy for kids next year!
