Saughton Girls Skate Jam TODAY in Scotland!

Something exciting is happening to the skate scene in Edinburgh this afternoon, girls of all ages are stepping on boards an getting their shred on.

It wasn’t always this way, the lads at Saughton Skate Park have always been supportive of the girl scene and have tried girl jams in the past with one or two girls appearing.

This year things are different, spring brought a new wave of gnarly girls descending upon Saughton Skate Park making it a perfect arena for the jam on Saturday.

This Jam is a celebration of the scene and of the well loved park. Saughton has something for everyone with its huge bowl, street section and ‘middle earth’.

“On the day there will be a Young Guns contest for all the little rippers, Girl Jam, high air contest, round the park race and a general street jam.
We also have the Nike demo team who will be making an appearance for some further shredding.

Finally we have been really lucky with awesome local skate shops, crews and companies giving us some love and donating prizes.

Of course there will also be plenty of music, chilling, stickers and if we are lucky some sunshine!
Come join us on the 23rd of August from 2-5pm and give Saughton and the girl scene some love! “

SGP Summer Jam 2014 Write Up!

This summer has been an awesome one for girls skateboarding, our Push The Prom event for Go Skateboarding Day kicked off the summer, followed by Jenna Selbys Annual UK Girl Skate Jam the weekend after. Earlier this month Rokeo launched their online store and then the SGP Summer Jam took place on the 12th July at The Front Skatepark in Weymouth!

Gutted we couldn’t make it, we caught up with the girls afterwards to find out what went down! 20140727-003229.jpg

“Saturday’s skate girl’s productions summer jam was an awesome success. We had a great turn out of girls, lots of skaters, bmxers, scooters and inliners!! There was something for everyone. We wondered where all these girls have been hiding! There were girls from Weymouth, Bournemouth, Wimborne, Sherborne, Bristol, Essex, London and even Ireland.

Girls travelled far and wide to come visit our seaside town!! Some even skated the prom alongside the seaside as it was such a nice day. We got to chat to some of the girls who were there and they were blown away with the variety and friendliness of the front skate park.

We introduced some beginner skate sessions from Harriet Alana which had a great turnout! Girls that scooted and bmx’d gave it a go! The girls and boys loved the mini jam we surprised them with, we got the girls on the ramps and gave out loads of prizes! From stickers to SGP new apparel! The boys got involved helping cheer them on! The music was amazing!

All the Music artists were such a great addition to the skating and the atmosphere. The front skate park have just introduced a new roll in which we used the base as the stage so the bands and musicians felt right at home in the park. We had a special guest skating and performing on the day! All the way from Ireland, musician SOAK joined us, just fresh back from performing at Glastonbury and a keen skater, she was happy getting involved and played a set of her beautiful tunes.

We had some some great stalls from Brah boys and Bahru, they both offer a unique skate/surf style that are constantly getting noticed. We ran our own tie dye table that went down a treat, people got to pick out a tee or bring their own and then tie dye the tees with crazy colours.20140727-003251.jpg

Everyone who was helping out on the day had a great time. We can’t thank the Volunteers, musicians, stalls and everyone who came to support the day enough, we were a giant team! Everybody enjoyed the day as much as the riders and spectators! All the girls and boys that came all had great attitudes and were so thrilled to have a day like this!

We asked people if they were interested in more events like this and there was YES’S from everyone!! Having such positive feedback from everyone has DEFINATLY made us start thinking about more events already! We are going to bring more and more people from around the country to our town as well as us collaborating with other towns and cities, to spread positive events all around, still helping to build confidence in individuals! We’re going to put Weymouth and skate girls productions on the map in this new movement. We are already arranging a girl’s session at the park already as we recently became managers of The Front.

20140727-003306.jpg

We’re on it! We want to get all abilities skating all over the country, all helping each other out. Its such a nice environment and supportive people pushing the girls skating team, like one big family that we are over the moon to be a part of and hope to reach across sea’s one day soon as well. What we have in store for everyone and our local town is too good to miss, follow our journey and be a part of it too.

I think overall seeing all the newly interested girls taking part and giving skating a go is what we totally appreciate

fighting the fear and going for something that can be looked at as a little scary, keep it up everyone, boys and girls, adults and children, keeping having ago and if you fall off like us, just hop back on and shake it off!”

RAD! We can’t wait for next year!

There are a few more girls events planned for this summer, Keep your diaries free for September 7th (More on this to come very soon!) and the week after on 14th September will see the 2nd Annual Unicorn Girls Jam at Mile End Skatepark in London!
We have teamed up with Sidewalk & Organiser Zofia to bring you an even bigger & better event this year! We can’t wait!

UK Girl Skate Jam review and full gallery online now!!

013_Julia_FlipThe Girl Skate Jam is the longest established female skateboarding competition in the UK, this being it’s 13th outing – again held at the Pioneer Skate Park in St Albans. 38 girls and ladies entered in all with more turning up to get a chance to roll around the park in the 2 hour jam.

“So many little ones turned up to watch the older girls that it seemed only fair to give them their own comp. This was swiftly followed by the under 18’s comp with Brighton local Josie Millard hammering away at tricks. this girl has super nice style (pretty much verging on ninja…) and it was great to watch her landing the backside flip on the bank and her clean flip up the step up.

There were so many girls entered into the over 18’s comp that it made it pretty difficult for the judges to decide. Black eye of the day went to Fran who up until the point of her accident had been skating really well – but face planting the floor never unfortunately helps anyones cause!

Weather had looked a bit dicky all day and of course within 10 minutes of being outside on the miniramp it pelted it down. The majority of the riders had at least got one run in. But Julia Brueckler’s back to back tricks (involving switch blunts!) pretty much nailed it for her.

The last group comp of the day was the sponsored event and tricks just went down. It was to be the head to head between Austria’s Julia Brueckler and Lucy Adams that really rounded off the day. So many tricks went down that I had to email the girls afterwards just to get an idea of what they had done! Over all Julia landed the most tricks and was awarded first place.

Amazing day and fun times were had down the pub afterwards with a early happy birthday drink to Girl Skate UK’s Danni Gallacher.

A big thank you has to go out to all of the sponsors – Chocolate, Lakai, Death, Animal, Rogue, Nikita, Roam and Seek, Rubicon, Vans, Rokeo, Cooler and Story…plus Andrew Selby for the hand crafted trophies (amazing results year on year!).

A massive thank you also has to go out to all the volunteers who continue to make this comp the success it is – Leigh, Kat, Charlie, Beckie, Matt, Wil, Ali, Glen, Ben, Marguerite and Geoff. And the Management Committee – Sue, Annette, Anne and Andy K – at Pioneer Skatepark for helping make it such a good day. Thanks guys!!”
